Intermountain Livestock Judging

Explanation
Each year youth work hard to raise a market animal, and enter it in the fair. They have waited all year to show this animal, and learn how to improve. It is important to provide youth livestock shows with qualified judges; however the list of knowledgeable individuals qualified is undersized. This in turn makes it difficult to hire proficient judges. To make the list more extensive, University of Idaho Extension educators teamed with extension personnel from Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. This was the birth of the Intermountain Livestock Judges training, which provides current meat animal industry guidelines. It also provides up to date evaluation methods, including the importance of being a positive influence, implementing carcass characteristics, and how to identify structural differences in livestock. Since the program began, individuals that are willing to judge youth shows, have been added to the list of qualified judges. Participants have judged 76 county fairs, 36 state shows, and 8 national shows in 14 different states!
