72 Hour Kit
Guidelines
The following list is a guideline to follow in preparing enough supplies to last you 72 hours in case of an emergency.

Medical Needs 
  • First Aid Kit 
  • Prescriptions and a list of medications and dosages 
  • Hearing aid batteries 
  • Information on medical devices like a pacemaker 
  • Insurance cards 
  • Names of doctors and relatives to notify if ill or injured 
  • Extra wheelchair batteries or oxygen 
  • Instructions for medical devices like oxygen concentrator

General Supplies 
  • Battery powered radio and flashlight 
  • Batteries 
  • Change of clothing and shoes 
  • Blanket or sleeping bag 
  • Extra keys for the house and/or car 
  • Cash or credit cards 
  • Coins for a pay phone 
  • Phone numbers of friends and relatives 
  • Insurance agents' names and numbers 
  • Water (Click here for special instructions on how to safely store water) 
  • Small bottle of Clorox 
  • Can opener 
  • Pet food -- pets will probably not be accepted at the shelter but assistance animals will

Cooking and Eating Supplies

  • Plastic silverware 
  • Paper plates 
  • Matches 
  • Candles 
  • Kerosene lamp (optional for shelter at home) 
  • Toilet paper 
  • Safety pins 
  • Aluminum foil 
  • Paper, pens or pencils

  • Special instructions for self care medical needs, like dialysis, feeding access care, diabetes regimen, etc. If you were unable to communicate, or very sick, these instructions will allow whoever is available to help you until medical help can be obtained.

If Food Supplies are Low
If activity is reduced, healthy people can survive on half their usual food intake for an extended period and without any food for many days. Food, unlike water, may be rationed safely, except for children and pregnant women.
